Duct heaters are devices used as part of a HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system to heat up the air in a building. They do this by warming the air that flows through the ducts. They are able to monitor the temperature of rooms and adjust the flow of warm air accordingly.
Usually duct heaters use electricity to heat the air flow. They have a heating element, which is a type of resistor, and this converts the electrical current passing through it into heat energy. Conduction or convection then passes this heat energy through the system, to heat the ducts and pass the warm air to where it is needed.
Duct heaters are useful because they are very energy efficient. They can deliver heat to cold rooms according to a specific time schedule, or based on feedback, so there is very little heat energy wasted.
